Still a Little Young

Still a Little YoungThis song features a few firsts for me. First, I used a new percussion instrument (new for me, that is) called a cajon. A cajon is a wooden box that, when played, sounds like a bass and snare drum. I also used bongos, and will likely re-record them again at a later date when I’ve built up more proficiency. This is my first original song recorded exclusively with my Ovation Custom Elite. Lastly, the only instrument I plugged in was my bass (my 5-string Ibanez SDGR), while all other tracks were recorded with a condenser mic.

Origin: This song was written in 2001, several years before my son was born. He’s 6 now, and I thought it would be nice to record this for him. The only other recording of this song is from a gig I did back in 2001. This version is fresher, more refined, and features a few updated lyrics.

Lyrics

Falling asleep at night with my son
I got so much to tell him, but he’s still a little young

I’ve got hammer and nails and a soccer ball
Got drawing paper and leaves in fall
I’ve got racing cars and electric train
Got all those things to keep a boy playing

I’d take him to a game to shout out loud
Take him to the rink to skate around
I’d take him for a walk and play in the snow
I’d take him anywhere that he wanted to go

I'm Happy as the day is bright
Got some light to give to my son
I’m ready for another round
Another beat on the drum

But he’s still a little young

I want fishing poles and scholarships
Want math and science and family trips
I want birthday parties and a favorite glove
Want so much for this boy to feel that he’s loved

I'm happy as the day is bright
Got some light to give to my son
I’m ready for another round
Another beat on the drum

Now get your feet up boy, no need to drag around
You've got to get outside and gain yourself some ground
I've got so much to teach you, so much you must learn
But I'll wait, I'll be patiently waiting for my turn

I'm happy as the day is bright
Got some light to give to my son
I’m ready for another round
Another beat on the drum

I’m ready for another round
Another beat on the...

Falling asleep at night with my son
I got so much to tell him, but he’s still a little young
